The South Florida Regional began in 2012 at Florida Atlantic University and has since grown into one of the premier robotics events in the region. After starting at FAU, the competition moved to the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center, then the Palm Beach Convention Center, and later returned to Fort Lauderdale. In 2025, for the first time, it will be hosted at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center.

Throughout its history, the South Florida Regional has welcomed teams from around the world, including participants from China, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, and Turkey, creating a truly international event.

The roots of FIRST Robotics in Florida date back to 1995, when Team SigmaC@TS—named after their sponsor Motorola’s “SIGMA” quality control program and their school mascot, the Panther—pioneered the program in the state. At that time, they had to travel to Boston to compete, as Florida had no competitions.

Florida’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) truly took off in 1999 with 28 teams competing at the Kennedy Space Center. Four years later, the event moved to the University of Central Florida Arena, where the Orlando Regional, one of the oldest FRC events in the country, has been held ever since.

With rapid team growth, Florida added a second regional event, the South Florida Regional, in 2012, and later, the Tallahassee Regional in 2022, reflecting the strong and growing presence of robotics in the state.
